 Charles Blancq is a former symphonic percussionist and jazz drummer, who has authored a book and many articles on jazz and related subjects. His Sonny Rollins: The Journey of a Jazzman (1983) is the definitive work on the great tenor saxophonist's early career. His articles and papers presented to the International Association of Jazz Educators (1980-89) and other publications cover a variety of topics concerning jazz in the modern era. More recently, Dr. Blancq has contributed the "Session Notes" to the Fantasy/Milestone seven CD package, Sonny Rollins: The Complete Prestige Recordings and several articles to the American National Biography (Oxford University Press).

Professor Blancq completed a M.A. at North Texas State University and a Ph.D. at Tulane, both in Historical Musicology. He has been a member of the music faculty at the University of New Orleans since 1970 and teaches courses in Jazz History, Twentieth Century Music, and Literature.
