Music Education applicants must be admitted to the UNO College of Education AND by audition to the Department of Music. Applicants should schedule an appointment with the appropriate faculty member well before UNO admissions deadlines for the desired semester of enrollment.
In addition to the audition requirements for the appropriate performance area (instrument or voice) listed below, students in music education must also participate in an interview with the coordinator of music education. In this interview, the student must be able to:
1. Articulate the reasons for wanting to become a teacher.
2. Demonstrate effective oral communication.
3. Present himself/herself in a professional manner.
Instrumental
(Woodwind/Brass/Percussion/Strings)
Audition Requirements
The instrumental audition has three components:
- Prepared selections. Two contrasting pieces or movements from a multi-movement work (one technical, one lyrical). The level of difficulty should be equivalent to or greater than the grade 4 selections found on most state solo and ensemble lists. The works should be selected to show the strengths of the performer.
- Scales: Play major scales through 4 flats and 4 sharps; chromatic scale.
- Sight-reading. Music is provided at the audition.
Evaluations will be based on the prospective student’s ability to demonstrate the following:
- Tone quality that is characteristic for the instrument.
- Technical facility appropriate for the work being performed.
- The ability to establish and maintain a tempo appropriate for the music.
- The ability to articulate (tongue, slur, bow, etc.) in both a correct (characteristic for the instrument) and an accurate manner, including the use of appropriate styles of articulation.
- Accuracy and security in reading and performing rhythms.
- Accuracy in intonation.
- The ability to play comfortably at all dynamic levels and to distinguish when each is appropriate for the music.
- The ability to make an effective musical statement that reflects knowledge of the structure of the work and the historical context of the composer and composition.
- The ability to read music at first sight.
- The ability to present himself/herself in a professional manne
Piano
The prospective student must:
- Perform pieces from three different musical eras (e.g. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth Century). Examples of pieces that meet minimum expected skill levels include:
- Bach – Two Part Invention
- Clementi – Sonatina
- Chopin – Prelude
- Movement from Debussy’s Children’s Corner Suite
- Perform scales: Two major and two minor, two octaves
- Demonstrate sight-reading ability.
Voice/Vocal Studies
The student should be prepared to perform two songs of contrasting styles from operatic, folk song or art song repertoire. It is preferred that one of these songs be in a language other than English. An accompanist will be provided – student must provide music.
The student should demonstrate the following:
- Accurate intonation
- Tone production that is pleasant and resonant
- Tone that has potential for professional development
- Ability to sight read simple melodies
- Ability to learn notes and rhythms without assistance
