Preliminary Jazz Studies Audition Tape

Jazz Audition Tape Format

The purpose of the pre-audition tape is to give the Jazz Studies faculty an opportunity to determine if you will be invited to perform a “live” audition. If your performance on the tape is of very high quality, we may choose to accept you on the basis of your recorded performance. If we are not able to accept you on the basis of the taped performance, we will either:

1)         Invite you to perform a “live” audition…or
2)         Encourage you to keep practicing and submit another tape at a future date.

Please adhere to the following guidelines when preparing the pre-audition tape:

 1. You can record this tape with any recording device as long as the audio is of respectable quality. Acceptable formats include VHS, DVD, or CD. YouTube and similar formats are acceptable as long as the transcription component is available. Emailed attachments are not acceptable.
 2. Please specify the program for which you are applying (undergraduate or graduate).
 3. In regard to the format of the tape, please include two selections that demonstrate your best playing. The following is a list of suggested tunes:
  • Blues for Alice (Parker)
  • Oleo (Rollins)
  • Rhythm-a-ning (Monk)
  • Anthropology (Parker)
  • All the Things You Are (Kern)
  • Autumn Leaves (Kosma)
  • Body and Soul (Green)
  • Billie’s Bounce (Parker)
  • Au Privave (Parker)

You are not required to perform the tunes listed above, but please choose music that will demonstrate:

  • your exposure to the jazz idiom,
  • your ability to improvise, and
  • the ability to play your instrument.

 4. You may use a “play-along” recording if you do not have a backup ensemble.
 5. Place your best performance first on the tape.
 6.  Please indicate who you are if there is more than one person playing.
 7.  In addition to performing two tunes, please play at least twenty-four measures of a transcribed jazz solo along with the original recording.
 8.  All of your performances, including your performance of the transcription, should be done “by memory”.
 9.  It would be a great help to us if you would include a résumé, but that is not required. However, make sure that your name, address, email, and phone numver are securely attached to your tape.

10. Additional Requirements:
The following is a list of instrument-specific additional requirements for the pre-audition tape:

Guitar – a short solo guitar arrangement
Drums – demonstrate swing and Latin styles, brush work, and play a short drum solo
Voice – demonstrate the ability to “scat” (improvise, and play simple jazz chords at the piano or guitar)

LIVE AUDITION

The prospective student will be expected to:

  • Be able to interpret melodies and improvise in a style that reflects the student’s exposure to the jazz idiom.
  • Perform from memory at least 24 bars of a single note improvised solo transcribed from a recognized jazz recording artist on their related instrument. This is to be performed along with the recording.
  • Hear, play and/or sing modes of the major scale on randomly dictated chords that are related to modes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic jazz harmony by playing and or singing common chord arpeggios and by aural recognition of common chord progressions.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of keyboard geography by playing basic triads and seventh chords on the piano

Please contact Edward Petersen, Coordinator of Jazz Studies (epeterse@uno.edu) if you have any additional questions.
