Louis Armstrong Outreach Program

Overview

The Louis Armstrong Jazz Quintet is an innovative graduate program at the University of New Orleans, located in the city that gave birth to Louis Armstrong... and jazz. Directed by highly-respected faculty, the members of the prestigious Quintet are able to develop life-long professional skills in a unique learning environment.

Made possible by the generous support of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, the program gives master's level music students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for learning, teaching, and performing.

Assistance

Members of the Quintet receive graduate assistantships, including full tuition waivers and stipends of $7,000 each. They also gain teaching experience, bringing the basics of jazz and the excitement of music to students in the New Orleans Public Schools.

Coached by members of the University of New Orleans Jazz Faculty, the Quintet participates in a number of workshops and master classes with internationally recognized performers such as Ellis Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, and Randy Brecker.

One of the most exciting aspects of the program is the strong relationship between UNO's jazz artists and the live music community in New Orleans. Performance opportunities abound, from jam-packed Frenchmen Street clubs to festivals - including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival - and other prestigious gigs. The Snug Harbor jazz club is an closely with Snug Harbor and other venues; the Louis Armstrong Quintet.
