Master of Music in PerformanceMaster of Music in Performance Recommended Course of Study:
Applied Lessons – At least nine credits of 6000-level lessons are needed (see the catalog for specific course numbers). Lessons are taken for a minimum of 3 semesters and additional semesters are frequently taken. Please note, however, that a maximum of 12 credits may be applied toward the degree. Lessons are required in the recital semester.
Music History – 3 credits are needed, usually chosen from: MUS 4202G Studies in Renaissance Music, MUS 4203G Studies in Baroque Music, MUS 4204G Studies in Music of the Classical Era, MUS 4205G Studies in Music of the Romantic Era, MUS 4206G 20th Century Music, MUS 4291G Seminar in Music History
Music Theory – 3 credits are needed, usually chosen from: MUS 6101 Analytical Studies of the Baroque/Classical Era, MUS 6102 Analytical Studies of the Romantic Era and 20th Century (MUS 4101G Contrapuntal Techniques, MUS 4102G 20th Century Techniques, MUS 6100 Graduate Theory in Performance, MUS 6191 Seminar in Music Theory are also available)
Graduate Recital – MUS 6990 The recital must contain at least 60 minutes of performed music. The program is to be selected with the approval of the major professor. It is the responsibility of the student to secure any and all additional musicians needed.
Electives
A directed Independent Study (DIS) is a one-on-one class dedicated to a specific topic agreed on by the student and the professor. No more than 9 hours of DIS can be counted toward the degree.
Participation in the following ensembles is encouraged: Privateer Chorus (MUS 4904G), University Chorale (MUS 4905G), Chamber Ensemble (MUS 4901G), Wind Ensemble (MUS 4908G), and University Orchestra (MUS 4910G). Please note: No more than 3 credits of ensemble can count towards the degree.
Graduate Colloquium – MUS 6900 (0 credit) Enrollment in Graduate Colloquium is required each semester for all full- and part-time graduate students. **33 credits are needed for graduation. Classes are 3 credits each unless otherwise noted. Some flexibility within this recommended curriculum is possible. Please check with the major advisor and graduate coordinator. All courses are selected with the approval of the major advisor
